TURNING POINT: BATTLE of SARAToGA
John Burgoyne, of the British army, led his troops from Canada into Upstate New York where American troops surrounded him. Two battles were fought in Burgoyne's attempt to escape. They were each fought 18 days apart on the same grounds. Both attempts failed.
On October 17, Burgoyne surrendered his entire army to the Americans. It was a great turning point for the Americans in the war. During the battles the Americans went from having 9,000 soldiers to having around 15,000 by the end. The British however went from 7,200 troops to 6,600 troops. This is also the time when Benedict Arnold, one of the biggest traitors in history, was relieved of his duties.
